In the aftermath of an extreme weather or climate event, often questions are raised about whether or not this event was caused by climate change. The science of 'climate change attribution' aims to answer some of these societal questions. I will discuss the experiences and lessons learned from the World Weather Attribution initiative ( on how to answer these questions in a scientifically robust way, but also, for example, how to communicate the results to a variety of audiences.
